Workforce

Outstanding
productivity, low absenteeism, and a strong work ethic characterize
Dickenson County's labor force. Workers have shown an exceptional
aptitude and willingness to handle many types of careers, including
customer service, manufacturing and health services, among others.
SI International
is located in the Dickenson County Technology Park and employs
nearly 100 agents at its customer service center. This center
provides support for the Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) for federal
government employees.
Dickenson County's
early economy was based on agriculture. With the coming of the
railroad in the early 1900s, the county's two main resources,
coal and lumber, could be easily transported to the major markets
in the East. The recent mechanization of mining has resulted in
high unemployment in the county, leaving a plentiful supply of
ready and willing labor.
