Dickenson
County has one local newspaper, The Dickenson Star/Cumberland
Times, which is distributed each Wednesday. The newspaper has
interesting and well-written articles about events which affect
the county. Other newspapers delivered in the county include the
Bristol Herald Courier, Bristol, Virginia-Tennessee; Bluefield
Daily Telegraph, Bluefield, West Virginia; Roanoke-Times, Roanoke,
Virginia; and Kingsport Times, Kingsport, Tennessee. Dickenson
County also receives a biweekly newspaper, The Coalfield Progress,
Norton, Virginia; and the Wall Street Journal.
The WDIC Broadcasting
Company is the only radio station in Dickenson County and is located
on Big Ridge between Clinchco and Clintwood. The station starts
its regular broadcasting day at 6 a.m.on Monday thru Saturday
and at 7 a.m. on Sunday. The station ends it broadcast at dusk
in accordance with FCC regulations. On July 2, 1989, WDIC Broadcasting
Company began 24-hour FM service throughout Southwest Virginia
and Eastern Kentucky.
Dickenson County
is served by three television cable companies: Adelphia Cable
Company, K&V Cable Company, and Cooney Cable Company. Each
cable company offers a wide variety of channels.
Dickenson
County Wireless Integrated Network (DCWIN) is a high-speed
network for Dickenson County and the surrounding region. It was
created to serve the advancement of communications (both voice
and data), for residents, businesses, government agencies, and
most importantly the public safety system. This effort has been
spearheaded by local, state, federal government agencies, and
especially the Dickenson County Board of Supervisors. DCWIN was
created in response to the limited availability of high-speed
Internet access at competitive rates.
DCWIN is the
“wave” of the future for Dickenson County and surrounding areas
allowing the enhancement of health, safety, and education for
the residents of Southwest Virginia. |
