Dickenson
County offers well-equipped medical facilities, including a hospital,
three home health agencies, medical equipment services and an
ambulance service. Also, a clinic is provided by the Dickenson
County Health Department and there are four community volunteer
rescue units which provide services for our residents.
Dickenson
Community Hospital, located in Clintwood, Virginia, opened in
November 2003. Dickenson Community Hospital is a not-for-profit
critical access hospital owned by the Industrial Development Authority
and managed by Norton Community Hospital. A recent expansion included
a 5,700 square foot physician office building on the hospital
campus. Dickenson Community Hospital has 25 acute care swing beds
The hospital
offers private and semi-private rooms, an intensive care unit,
telemetry, and a twenty-four hour physician-staffed Emergency
Room. The hospital provides occupational therapy a an outpatient
surgery center.
The cardio-pulmonary
services operates a black lung clinic to assist patients suffering
from chronic lung disorders. The radiology department offers topography,
mammography, image intensification, C.A.T. scans, bone densitometry,
echocardiography, and ultrasound. The hospital also provides physical
therapy and the area’s only occupational medical therapy.
All of these services are offered in a beautifully designed and
highly modern hospital which was opened to the public on November
1, 1986.
In addition,
many county residents utilize medical facilities in surrounding
areas including hospitals in Abingdon, Richlands, Grundy, Bristol,
Wise, Norton, Pikeville, Kentucky, and Kingsport, Tennessee.
Dickenson
County has one nursing home, the Heritage Hall Health Care Center,
located in Clintwood. Heritage Hall specializes in individual
long-term care and is licensed by the Virginia Department of Health.
Most employees are long-time residents of the area and bring to
their jobs a pride in their community that is evident in their
work. Nursing services for residents include skin care, rehabilitation,
and mobility enhancement. In addition, the home is located near
the Dickenson Community Hospital which provides easy access for
patients.
Additionally,
the Appalachian Agency for Senior Citizens provides free services
for our area senior citizens. Blood Pressure checks and cholesterol
screening are given at the Clintwood and Clinchco Senior Citizens
buildings.
Eight community
medical clinics provide medical services for the county. These
clinics are: Stone Mountain Health Care Services, Inc., Dominion
Health Services, Inc., Dickenson Clinic, Dickenson Heart and Lung
Clinic, Dickenson County Pediatric and Adolescent Center, Dr.
Senter’s Clinic, Grace Medical Clinic and Sutherland’s
Clinic.

Dickenson
County is served by the Virginia State Police Med Flight Services.
They med flight patients in need of advanced or specialized care
to Welmont Health Systems in Bristol or Kingsport, Tennessee.
These facilities are within a twenty minute flight time. Burn
victims are air lifted to the University of Virginia Burn Center
in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Dickenson
Medical Associates, located next to the Dickenson Community Hospital,
includes staff physicians Dr. Patricia Vanover, Dr. Craig Graul
and Janice Payne, Nurse Practitioner. Internal Medicine, Family
Practice and Diabetic Education services are offered each weekday.
Hours are Monday-Friday 8:30 AM - 5:00 PM. Walk-ins are welcome
anytime, but a walk-in only clinic is available each Monday from

Dickenson
Community Hospital's new Surgical Center team is led by Dr. Prospero
Miranda who is board-certified in abdominal surgery and has practiced
in our community for over 30 years. Just a few of the surgical
services available include: Appendectomy, Circumcision, Colonoscopy,
