Outstanding
productivity, low absenteeism, and a strong work ethic characterize
Dickenson County's labor force. Dickenson County's early economy
was based on agriculture. With the coming of the railroad in the
early 1900s, the county's two main resources, coal and lumber,
could be easily transported to the major markets in the East.
The recent mechanization of mining has resulted in high unemployment
in the county, leaving a plentiful supply of ready and willing
labor.
