A variety
of area musical entertainment is available year round. The
Ralph Stanley Hills of Home Music Festival is held annually
in May and features many nationally known musicians.
The
Ralph Stanley Museum and Traditional Mountain Music Center
opened in October 2004 in Clintwood. The museum is dedicated to
promoting and maintaining mountain Bluegrass music through workshops,
seminars and conferences and contains many exhibits chronicling
the careers of Ralph Stanley and Carter Stanley. The museum is
also an attraction on The
Crooked Road: Virginia's Heritage Music Trail.
The
Breaks Interstate Park has an amphitheater that hosts entertainment
groups year round. The Dickenson County Fair features many area
musicians as well as different types of arts and crafts. Area
schools provide variety shows, concerts, and drama productions
throughout the year. Several dramatic productions are also presented
each year by the Roadside Theater Production Company.
The Jettie Baker
Distance Learning Center located in Clintwood hosts entrainment
groups year-round. Entertainment encompasses bluegrass, gospel
and other types of music. Theater productions are provided by
schools and Roadside Theater Production Company.
Several libraries
that serve the county. The largest library in the county is the
Johnnie B. Deel Library located in Clintwood. The facility, constructed
in 1975, offers a wide variety of services. The number of books
currently available for circulation is approximately 66,000. Circulation
has been tallied at 10,000 to 15,000 volumes monthly.
The library
offers many staff services in addition to lending books. These
include the use of magazines, video and audio cassettes, records,
filmstrips, and computers. The county library offers adult literacy
classes, student tutoring sessions, and preschool activities,
including story reading programs, songs, games, crafts, coloring,
and visitations by resource people. Examples are personnel from
the forestry department, high school drama clubs and school choirs.
A reading club
for elementary school children is available during the months
of June, July, and August. Conference rooms are available for
public use.
In addition
to the main library, a branch is located in the town of Haysi.
The two libraries are completely computerized and offer an inter-library
loan system with the surrounding branches of the Lonesome Pine
Regional Library, Southwest Virginia Community College, and Mountain
Empire Community College. The libraries in the county schools
are well equipped and provide information to meet the needs of
the students and county residents.
